Warning about the dangers of Tanning Beds

Tanning beds are as deadly as mustard gas, arsenic, plutonium and other known carcinogens, international cancer experts have ruled. The International Agency for Research on Cancer yesterday moved UV tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation to its highest cancer risk category, removing any ambiguity about their threat by labelling them “carcinogenic to humans.” The move was based on a comprehensive review of studies, which found the risk of skin melanoma increases by 75 per cent when the use of tanning devices starts before the age of 30. The report, by the agency’s Cancer Monograph Working Group, was published online Tuesday in the medical journal Lancet Oncology. The agency is the cancer arm of the World Health Organization. Until now, ultraviolet radiation and UV tanning equipment have been classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” The new classification places them alongside other known cancer-causing agents, including asbestos, benzene and the human papillomavirus. Cancer experts and advocacy groups welcomed the elevated classification. “This is important … it is another piece of evidence one can point to from a very conservative and eminent body,” said Dr. David Hogg, a cancer physician at Princess Margaret Hospital. “It doesn’t change my opinion, which is tanning beds are a dangerous carcinogen and should not be used at...

Recession Busting: Brothels Offering Buffet-Style, Flat-Rate, All You Can F__ Deals & More!

The “flat-rate sex” promotions, which are based on all-you-can-eat restaurants, have been introduced by brothel owners in a bid to revive trade that has fallen around 30 per cent in the economic downturn. Other imaginative offers include rebates for pensioners and people on benefits, 10 per cent discounts for men who arrive by bicycle or public transport, and free shoe-polishing for customers who stay overnight. But it is the flat-rate deals – which are priced as low as £60 (€70) – that have attracted particular controversy in a country where prostitution is legal and generally well-tolerated. The promotion is popular which brothel owners who have to pay their sex workers a fixed daily wage whether or not they have any...

Turtles at JFK

Passengers coming into and leaving from JFK airport have put up with all kinds of delays — weather, late connections, crowded airspace — but this delay may have been a first. One runway was shut down Wednesday morning because 78 turtles were walking on it. According to the Port Authority, the turtles measured about 8 inches long and weighed 2 to 3 pounds. They were eventually shooed away and returned to the Jamaica wetlands from whence they came. But there were delays of up to an hour. The turtles also caused delays at La Guardia. NBC News correspondent Anne Thompson, who was on a flight from Raleigh to La Guardia, reports that the pilot on her flight announced that all flights were delayed throughout the New York area because of crowded airspace caused by the wayward reptiles. I think the Zombie kid was up to...

Man Dies After Falling Into Tank of Chocolate

A Camden man died after he fell into a vat of melted chocolate at a factory Wednesday morning. Vincent Smith II, 29, was standing on a nine-foot-high platform loading chunks of raw chocolate into a melting tank at Cocoa Services in Camden, N.J. when he fell in around 10:30 a.m., according to Camden County D.A. spokesman Jason Laughlin. After falling, Smith was struck in the head by an agitator — a large paddle-like mixing device – and killed. Coworkers acted quickly to try and save Smith. They turned off the machine but were unable to pull the injured man from the eight-foot vat. He was eventually removed from the machine by firefighters. This story reminds me of this scene in the movie Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory… very...

Why retire when you could work at the age 102

A 101-year-old woman has no plans to retire from the chip shop she opened more than 80 years ago. Connie Brown and her late husband Sidney opened Brown’s cafe in Pembroke, west Wales, in 1928. Mrs Brown, who was awarded an MBE in 2006, is still serving chips six days a week. “When we first started a bag of chips cost a half a penny and a penny,” she told BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme. “It was a coal fire in those days. We used a hand chipper for cleaning, everything had to be done by hand,” said Mrs Brown. She lives above the chip shop and begins a typical day at 9am. “I get the fish all cut and washed and ready, the batter is made and then I’ll go home for a cup of tea,” she said. ‘Biggest day’ She returns to the shop by 11am to cook for customers until 2.30pm, after which she has another break before closing for the day. Mrs Brown, who will soon turn 102, vividly remembers the day she was awarded the MBE. She said: “That was the biggest day in my life. I’d never been to Buckingham Palace before. “I had a walk up to meet the Queen, and shook hands. It was beautiful, honestly she was a lovely person.” Mrs Brown also told the programme that she does not eat any vegetables, and insists that fish and chips is all she...

Famous motorcar Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ banned from procession

The motorcar of the 1968 movie “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” was banned from a parade in Norwich, England — because the 50-year-old car doesn’t have an inspection sticker. “It proved too difficult to get the necessary permission and insure the car,” parade official John Bultitude said. “It would have been easier if Chitty really did fly, as a pilot’s license only takes 45 hours to...
